Long Sexual Legs

Longlegged fly dorsal view

It’s got legs and it knows how to use them. So to speak. According to the indispensable BugGuide.net, adult members of the family Dolichopodidae mate after exhibiting “elaborate and unique behavior, involving the males displaying their legs to the female.” This individual was fairly small; I see many of them all over the place, but especially on leafy plants. In addition to being colorful and colorfully longlegged, they also prey upon small insects including aphids.
