This bagworm caterpillar (Dahlica triquetrella; approximately 6-7mm) is a hidden gem — living its larval life in a homemade bag. It can use plant and animal parts, as well as sand to form its mobile home; and sand looks like a major component in this individual’s handiwork. According to BugGuide.net, these critters also must eat insects to mature, somewhat unusual for a caterpillar. For your enjoyment, a little macro video as well (sorry it is lacking in “action”)!
He’s a cool one! Where’d you find him?
It was on our trash bin. These photos/video are older; last fall I found a bunch on our fence. They are pretty inconspicuous.
