Contortion Art

mesh web weaver spider with longlegged fly prey

Little Foes: the mesh web weaver spider has contorted a longlegged fly into dinner.

There are a lot of common creatures out there in uncommon poses. The fly here is all bent out of shape…and for good reason. For me, it evokes confusion, possibly horror, given what we know about flies and spiders. But the spider, with only it’s little globby, marbled abdomen in focus belies that. What we know and what we see converge.
