Behind the Orange Mask

male Platycryptus undatus jumping spider hanging on rim of a drinking glass

The orange band over the eyes indicates that this is a male Platycryptus undatus jumping spider.

Last summer I was visiting friends, and they had these jumping spiders all over (and inside!) their house. Obviously a treat for me. They were pretty cooperative, too, relatively speaking. I kept this one at bay by guiding it one way or another with a drinking glass, on which it happens to be perched over the rim in this shot.
