Is it safe to come out yet? (Sitticus pubescens jumping spider)

A tiny Sitticus pubescens jumping spider hides in the crags of a brick.

The weather is getting more friendly for dog walkers, but we are still a little ways off from real bug weather. The jumping spiders that patrol the brick are some of the first arthropods I encounter each year. Here is a Sitticus pubescens jumping spider I shot last year in early spring. This pose, hiding in the nooks and crannies of the brick, is pretty typical for these very small spiders. I’m looking forward to seeing a new generation of these little guys.
