Let’s Begin, Again (Hover fly, Syrphidae)

A hover fly (Syrphidae) at rest on a small pink flower.

So another long hiatus comes to an end, though this time I managed to do something good in the interim. (Creative writing!) But it’s really true: if you don’t use it, you lose it. So, for the time being, consider this an attempt at not losing it. Also consider it part of a wider attempt to increase my creative, uh, mass: I’ve decided to start publishing non-bug photos at my other (mostly dormant) WordPress site. We’ll see how that goes, but thanks in advance for checking it out.

Meanwhile, we have a photo: it’s one of the first photos I posted to this site. The original rendering showed a lot of ghosting or haloing along the fly’s and flower’s edges. Using different software to process it allowed me to avoid that artifact completely in this newer version. The trade-off (there’s always a trade-off) was that the background became somewhat striated, especially at the darker right side. C’est la vie. Trade-off accounted for, I like this one better.

  1. Looks nice. A few weeks ago I decided to do what you are doing also, I just haven’t made the plunge though and I won’t be posting to a different site. I feel like I’m doing the same thing over and over with my insect and flower photos and I never started out to do just macro photography. I haven’t figured out just how or when I’ll do this but it has to happen as I can’t keep doing the same thing over and over.

I’m glad you’re back and hope it all works out.

    1. Well, you could keep doing the same thing, that would just make you insane, right? Or would that make you a definition? :)

I did kind of set out primarily for macro but I guess it’s natural to want to change it up. Keeps one fresh creatively too. I find when I travel I take photos, and less so in the macro arena (though I usually try to have macro capability whenever I have my camera). You’ll find a new inspiration. I keep seeing astrophotography and thinking it would be great. One day…

Thanks for the well wishes and checking in. I hope to keep it up; goodness knows I have enough bug photos if I have nothing else!
