You can stumble onto a new, unexpected subject at any time. It was either shortly before or after I had witnessed and photographed this violent episode, that I did some close up photography on my faithful chocolate lab, who likes to set up shop wherever I go, even if it’s around a patch of weed flowers deep in the backyard. I sort of just “wandered” (read: rolled) over during a break from the tachinid flies, solitary bees, and a pine elfin butterfly at the weed patch. I didn’t realize she had this cracked nail. She’s had a couple bad broken, infected nails that required treatment, but nothing came of this one, if my memory serves. I’m not sure if the black and white is that great — the tones and contrast is pretty subtle, too subtle maybe — but I like it. Color version below for reference.

Nice, had me wondering what is it.
