All This Way to Find You (Blue Dasher, Pachydiplax longipennis)

dragonfly with green eyes and blue abdomen with black tip pointe upwards at end of broken stalk
A blue dasher dragonfly, Pachydiplax longipennis, poses in the obelisk position on a sunny day in Key West, Florida.

This dragonfly, Pachydiplax longipennis, may be the only one I have photographed with continued success. I was a little surprised that I found it all the way at the edge of the United States, humoring me as always, but I probably shouldn’t have been. I did manage to shoot a couple other types of dragonflies that sunny day, but the Blue Dasher remains, as ever, the easiest going subject among the insect giants, come North or come South.

  1. To me the two large dark spots on the head plus the one small one makes it look as though he is upside down with his head turned to look at the camera. :)
